Municipal secondary modern school with bilingual german/english branch
The Städtische Realschule Waltrop began its work as the “Städtische Mittelschule für Knaben und Mädchen” on April 13th 1948. From a middle school with one class (25 boys and 25 girls) and one classroom developed, under the leadership of Johannes Wrycza (1948-1973), Rolf Lütkenhaus (1974-1999), Norbet Lützel (1999-2007) and Christa Müther (since 2007), into a vibrant school in which many different interchanges are possible and which has found its firm place in the school landscape and life of Waltrop and earned itself a good reputation- even beyond the town borders. In 1991 the Städtische Realschule Waltrop was one of the first secondary moderns in North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW) and Germany to introduce a bilingual branch with the target language English, in order to meet the requirements of a Europe that is growing together, through enhanced language skills.
As the first secondary school in Waltrop, it has educated generations of young Waltropers, prepared them for the constantly rising demands in the world of work and opened up the possibly of further education through qualifications. Even today, the pupils still feel closely connected to the school and also entrust their children to the school; therefore, the Städtische Realschule Waltrop enjoys popularity amongst the three schools in the town (Realschule, Gymnasium and Gesamtschule), where 708 pupils in 24 classes are taught.
